The Purpose of International Travel Insurance
If you were to ask most people what is the purpose of international travel insurance the responses will not be varies. Most would state it is designed to maintain health and safety by providing medical care. If you press people further on what they mean by “medical care” they would respond that it means whatever is necessary to deal with the medical problem. This is not entirely accurate. Most travel insurance policies are designed to provide limited coverage in order to make it possible for the person to return home and receive complete care.
In other words, most travel insurance policies are designed to cover immediate care when a medical problem arises. While there are exceptions, most travel insurance police are not intended to cover a six month will receive stay in the hospital. Many of these policies will provide coverage until you are ready to travel. Then, the policy holder will need to return home for further medical care. So, in reality, most travel insurance policies are a temporary type of insurance and not a means to comprehensive care.
Granted, different insurance policies will have different levels of coverage. However, many policy holders rush into making a policy purchase without examining the terms of their policy. Part of the reason for this is lack of familiarity with travel insurance policies and part of the reason is assuming that travel policies are the same as traditional HMOs, etc. Then there are those who will only look at the price of the policy to their own detriment. This is not the case! That is why it is important to make sure whether or not your travel policy is comprehensive and includes full medical treatment. This way, there will be no unpleasant surprises if it become necessary to use the policy if a medical emergency occurs.
