Deductibles and Medical Insurance for Travel
When you are deciding on which medical insurance for travel plans to select it is always important look at the deductible you will have to pay. If your deductible is too low then you may be paying a premium that is excessive. If your deductible is too high then you may have a low monthly premium, but you will be paying a significant amount out of pocket for your medical expenses. The amount of money you may have to pay will be based on your deductible. That is why it is critical to select a plan with the deductible you are most comfortable with.
For those unfamiliar with what a deductible is, it is the initial amount of money that you must pay prior to your insurance coverage absorbing medical expenses. In other words, if your policy includes a $50 deductible and a medical bill is $175, then you must pay $50 out of pocket. The insurance company will pay the remaining $125. As previously mentioned, selecting the plan with the right deductible is critical. This is because if you selected deductible outside of your affordability range you will run into a number of problems with paying medical bills. If your deductible is too high then you may not have the right policy for your particular needs. High deductibles are generally associated with expansive (and expensive) medical procedures such as heart surgery. When you are traveling, many of the medical problems you run into will be outside this realm. That is why looking for a policy with a fair deductible is a wise idea.
Of course, if you have a serious pre-existing condition then you may want a policy that covers serious conditions. Yes, the deductible may be high but this is the price you pay (literally) for quality medical care.
